Content strategy and management for DC Government websites
About the Program
The Role
I worked for the DC Government’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer for 13 years. During my tenure I wrote and edited content in 3 different content management systems, did front-end development, taught classes, and eventually managed a team of editors and developers working on DC.gov.
The Process
During my time with the District, I helped see through two different full website migrations to different content management systems and managed the day-to-day editorial maintenance of over 100 individual agency sites. The team collaborated with Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind to test the website for accessibility and our research informed our monthly training sessions for web managers in 508 accessibility practices and writing for government websites.
The Impact
Our accessibility efforts efforts led to a consistent accessibility score above 90% on all 120+ DC Government agency websites— a proud accomplishment that resulted in bringing city services to the people who need them most. The style and accessibility guide that I edited and taught classes on continues to guide new web managers in creating meaningful and accessible content.
