DC.Gov

I worked with and eventually led a small team of editors and developers responsible for content strategy and management of the DC Government’s websites.

About the Program

The Role

I worked for the DC Government’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer for 13 years. During my tenure I wrote and edited content in 3 different content management systems, did front-end development, taught classes, and eventually managed a team of editors and developers working on DC.gov.

The Process

During my time with the District, I helped see through two different full website migrations to different content management systems and managed the day-to-day editorial maintenance of over 100 individual agency sites. The team coordinated user testing for accessibility with Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind and our research informed our monthly training sessions in Section 508 accessibility practices and writing for the web.

The Impact

Our accessibility efforts led to a consistent accessibility score above 95% on all 120+ DC Government agency websites— a proud accomplishment that made the District’s digital services accessible to as many residents as possible. The style and accessibility guide that I collaborated with the team to create and maintain continues to guide new web content managers in creating meaningful and accessible content.
